AADMD - AAIDD Joint Training Session

AADMD is teaming up with AAIDD (American Association on Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities) to host a joint day of training for attendees of both the AADMD & AAIDD annual meetings. This unique day of comprehensive training will be a post-conference day for AAIDD and a pre-conference day for AADMD.

Title: Interdisciplinary Assessment for Initial Diagnosis of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in Childhood.

Presenters: Sulkes, S., Hewitt, A., Potter, C., Bachelor, C., Chapin, S.

Description: This session presents a scenario in which an initial, multidisciplinary assessment for intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) is performed for a child, the team meets to discuss the assessment, and additional assessments and interventions are considered.  There will be five presentations, followed by a discussion and panel Q&A, which will be relevant to the clinical practice of Psychologists and Social Workers who work with people with IDD and their families. Each of the five presenters will describe a specific discipline’s tools, perspectives, and considerations in the assessment and discussion: pediatrics, social work, education, physical therapy, and Act Early services. The discussion and Q&A will address the typical training provided on IDD for the represented disciplines and recommended community-based interventions for the child and their family.

 Learning Objectives:

1. The participant will describe the typical multidisciplinary assessment process and the range of community-based interventions for children with IDD and their families.

2. The participant will discuss the impact of incomplete assessment and inadequate community-based interventions on the outcomes for children with IDD.

3. The participant will critique training programs designed for professionals-in-training that cover topics related to children with IDD.

11:00 AM: ADULTHOOD PANEL

Title: Interdisciplinary Assessment for Significant Behavioral Change in an Adult with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Presenters: Ervin, D., Rotholz, D., Goldwasser, R., Campanella, T., Murray, N.

Description: This session presents a scenario in which a multidisciplinary assessment is performed for an adult with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who evidences a significant behavioral change, the team meets to discuss the assessment, and additional assessments and interventions are considered.  There will be five presentations, followed by a discussion and panel Q&A, which will be relevant to the clinical practice of Psychologists and Social Workers who work with people with IDD and their families. Each of the five presenters will describe a specific discipline’s tools, perspectives, and considerations in the assessment and discussion: psychology/applied behavior analysis, pharmacology, long term supports and services, public policy, and supported decision making. The discussion and Q&A will address the typical training provided on IDD for the represented disciplines and recommended community-based interventions for the adult and their family.

2. The participant will assess the public policies that determine the scope of community-based supports for adults with IDD.

Title: Interdisciplinary Assessment for Significant Weight Loss in an Elderly Adult with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

 Description: This session presents a scenario in which a multidisciplinary assessment is performed for an adult with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who evidences a significant weight loss, the team meets to discuss the assessment, and additional assessments and interventions are considered.  There will be four presentations, followed by a discussion and panel Q&A, which will be relevant to the clinical practice of Psychologists and Social Workers who work with people with IDD and their families. Each of the four presenters will describe a specific discipline’s tools, perspectives, and considerations in the assessment and discussion: dentistry, nursing, long term supports and services, and public policy. The discussion and Q&A will address the typical training provided on IDD for the represented disciplines and recommended community-based interventions for the adult and their family.
