Los Angeles UCLA/NTG Workshop

Due to an overwhelming response we have reached capacity and registration is now closed for this event. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you.

An educational workshop on aging, dementia, and developmental disabilities will be held on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 in Los Angeles, California. The workshop open to any interested persons, be they parents or caregivers, workers in agencies, administrators, care coordinators, students, and others. The workshop is a joint effort of the National Task Group on Intellectual Disabilities and Dementia Practices, the Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center at UCLA, and the local Los Angeles Area Interagency Planning Committee.

This workshop, one of a series organized by the National Task Group in concert with local partners in accord with the recently initiated National Alzheimer’s Plan which was issued by the federal government under the National Alzheimer’s Project Act, has as its goal providing an orientation on the primary issues and concerns associated with the growing rate of dementia among older adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This situation is causing a growing concern among advocacy and provider organizations as it leads to a change in function, compromises independence, and places an undue burden on family caregivers.

The workshop is designed to address the fundamentals of aging related changes and decline, the nature and progression of the various dementias, and an overview of community support and care options (designed to preclude late-life institutionalization). The National Task Group has been working with groups across the United States to expand general knowledge and awareness of dementia among people with developmental disabilities. This workshop is part of a series coming under Goal E of the National Task Group’s Action Plan.

The National Task Group is a group chartered to examine the issues and challenges in the United States faced by adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families, caregivers, and friends, by aging-related decline and dementia of various causes. The National Task Group has issued a national report on its findings – “My Thinker’s Not Working – A National Strategy for Enabling Adults with Intellectual Disabilities Affected by Dementia to Remain in Their Community and Receive Quality Supports”. The report is available for download from this website.

The primary faculty will be Dr. Matthew P. Janicki, of the University of Illinois at Chicago’s RRTC on Aging with Developmental Disabilities – Lifespan Health and Function, Dr. Mike Rafii of UCSD, and Drs. Linda D. Nelson and Jean de Vellis, of UCLA. Other speakers will be topic leaders at a series of break-out sessions and members of a panel discussion which will conclude the workshop; panelists will be representatives of major local advocacy or provider organizations from the aging and disabilities sectors.

The workshop will run from 9:00 am to 4:00pm and will be held at the Neuroscience Research Building Auditorium on the UCLA Campus (635 Charles E. Young Drive South in Los Angeles). The cost is $40, with a reduction of $5 for early registrants (all registration occurring before October 1 will be eligible for the cost reduction).
