Multi Sensory Environment Conference

AADMD INFO BLAST - FOR AADMD MEMBERS

Many of our patients have sensory processing deficits and challenges. This upcoming conference will address these issues as well as introducing the enriched environment.
You might also want to check out the American Association on Multi Sensory Environments (www.aamse.us). There are several AADMD members who are evaluating the role of the MSE in the clinical setting and implementing them in examination and treatment rooms.

Empowering individuals for an extraordinary life

For many people with and without special needs a sense of empowerment occurs in a multi sensory environment. The Hidden Angel Foundation is pleased to bring the International Multi Sensory Environment  (ISNA) Symposium to Birmingham, Alabama, October 1-3, 2010. This is the first time this annual groundbreaking symposium of researchers, practitioners, and experts, who will provide workshops and lectures in the field of Multi Sensory Environments (MSE) and the resilience of the brain, will be held in the USA.

There will be plenty of opportunity to see and experience how MSE can benefit many individuals. Register now at www.isna2010.org.

Multi Sensory Environments – Some unique workshops and presentations.
  • Colors not only express and create mood, they also give meaning to and influence our observations of our inner and outer world. In Snoezelen we use colors all the time. Maurtis Eijgendaal talks about using colors in the multi sensory room and what colors mean for us.
  • Local traditions and cultural aspects affect the ways multi sensory techniques are used in diverse client settings both in everyday environments and nature.  Dr. Marja Sirkkola & Paivi Veikkola combine their sociocultural work based on social pedagogy with method of Multi Sensory techniques. Dr. Sirkkola and Ms. Veikkola’s workshop consisting of providing a theoretical introduction and practical examples of Sociocultural Multisensory Work.
  • Multi Sensory Environments provide an effective approach in reducing one’s maladaptive behavior, yet currently the jury is still out concerning its effectiveness to engage in more socially acceptable behaviors once outside the room. This exploration of Snoezelen outside of the “room” provides a model through the framework of Gentle Teaching (GT) that one could possibly use as a design for an individual’s future as a valued community member. Dr. Anthony McCrovitz discusses this framework of GT and facilitating the developing relationship and cultivates a deeper understanding of healthy social/emotional development.
  • All humans are sensory beings. The use of the senses, individually and in collaboration with the other senses, accounts for all learning. But the debate still rages pertaining to the treatment of human frailties/disorders through the various senses. Dr. Anthony Hollander discusses a way of constructing a “marriage” of sorts between the MSE approach and basic behavioral/research principles (e.g., contingent versus non-contingent, data collection/tabulation/analysis).
  • From the book “Snoezelen Materials Homemade” (Ad Verheul, 2007).Michel Theroux (Prof. Snoezelen) uses his own experience with Snoezelen to present homemade multi sensory materials and how to use them.
Up Next Week? Reason #18: Focusing on support for MSE and training
